As the EV ecosystem grows, control and efficiency have become critical for EV charging operators and service providers. Managing charging permissions across large driver groups often creates operational complexity, especially when charging networks scale quickly.

The new Private charging only feature solves this problem by allowing you to restrict all drivers in your organisation to charge exclusively within their assigned charging network with a single setting.

This means that the drivers cannot use Public charging points or Roaming.

In this guide, we will cover:

  1. Key Benefits of Private Charging Only feature
  2. How it Works
  3. What Happens When it is Enabled
  4. Frequently Asked Questions

1. Key Benefits of Private Charging Only feature

  • Efficiency at scale: No need to adjust driver settings individually. Apply settings to all existing and future drivers at once.
  • Improved network consistency: Ensure all drivers remain aligned to their assigned charging network, without manual oversight.
  • Better control: Centralised configuration reduces the risk of errors across large driver bases.
  • Time savings: Free up your team to focus on operations rather than repetitive work.

This feature empowers you to manage your network more efficiently while keeping operational processes simple and reliable.

2. How the Private Charging Only Setting Works

Prerequisites

Before you can activate the "Private Charging Only" feature, please ensure that:

  • Driver Module is active for your organisation. Learn more about how to manage modules here.
  • You need to have the Administrator user role. Read more about roles here.

To set up “Private charging only”, you will log in to Virta Hub and navigate to the Organisation tab.
Select Information. Click on Advanced Settings. Scroll down to Driver Settings to locate Private Charging Only.

Select your preferred setting by checking the box:

  • Restrict access to private charging only

  • No restriction

When restricted access is enabled:

  • All existing drivers will be limited to private charging within their assigned charging network.

  • The restriction will automatically apply to all new drivers added in the future.

Click Save changes to confirm your selection.

Note

  • This feature applies to all drivers in your organisation, so please proceed with caution.

  • Please note that the update process may take a few moments to apply across your entire organisation.

3. What Happens After Activation

  • Drivers can only charge at stations within their assigned charging network.
  • The rule applies automatically to both current and future drivers.
  • Access management rules you’ve already set for your organisation's charging network continue to apply.

4. Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I apply this setting only to specific drivers?
No, this is an organisational-level setting. Once enabled, it applies to all drivers, including existing drivers and those joining in future.
  • What happens if I add a new driver after enabling the setting?
New drivers will automatically inherit the “Private Charging Only” restriction. No extra configuration is required.
  • Can the “Private charging only” setting be changed later?
Yes. You can update the setting at any time by selecting “Not Restricted.” Once applied, drivers will no longer be limited by this rule.
  • Do I need to update each driver’s profile individually after enabling?
No. The update applies across the organisation automatically, saving you time.
  • Why don’t I see the “Private charging only” option in my organisation settings?
Please ensure your organisation has the Driver Module activated and that your user role is Administrator or Driver Manager.

That's all. You now know how to manage the “Private charging only" setting. You now have a powerful, time-saving tool to:

  • Simplify driver management
  • Ensure drivers' private charging access within your charging network
  • Reduce operational overhead
